The Minimum Viable Beauty Routine

The shortest routine that keeps skin healthy and you presentable. Three steps at night, three in the morning, and permission to ignore the other nine.

The whole routine fits on one clean corner of the counter.

Somewhere along the way, "taking care of your skin" turned into a twelve-step evening program with a supply chain. If you truly love that ritual, keep it. This article isn't for you. This is for everyone who quit the whole routine because the whole routine was too much. The fix isn't more discipline. It's a smaller routine you'll actually do.

The principle: consistency beats ambition

A basic routine done nightly gets you further than a fancy one done when you have the energy. Skin responds to repetition, not intensity. That's the whole philosophy. Everything below is just the application.

So the bar for every product here is simple. Would you still do this step at 11:40 on a Tuesday night? If not, it doesn't make the minimum routine. It can live in the weekend tier.

Night: the three that matter

Cleanse properly, including the makeup. Sleeping in it undoes everything else. Moisturize while your face is still slightly damp. And two or three nights a week, exfoliate gently before the moisturizer. Exfoliating just means clearing off dead skin. Most dullness and rough texture is yesterday's skin overstaying.

That's the night shift. Cleanser, moisturizer, occasional exfoliant. Nothing here costs much. The workhorse versions of all three live at the drugstore. The fancy versions mostly buy you fragrance and packaging. Buy whichever version you'll enjoy using. Enjoying it is what keeps the streak alive.

The one splurge rule
If you want to spend more somewhere, spend it on the product that touches your skin longest: the moisturizer. And only if you can feel the difference. Never splurge on the cleanser. It's on your face for thirty seconds.

Morning: even shorter

Rinse. Moisturize. SPF. A full cleanse in the morning is optional unless you're oily. If your moisturizer has SPF built in, the morning is two steps, and one of them is water.

Sunscreen is the step doing the most work in this entire article. It's the one thing every dermatologist agrees on. It's cheap. And it makes half the expensive "anti-aging" aisle unnecessary. If you take one new habit from this site, take this one.

"The bar for every step: would you still do it at 11:40 on a Tuesday night?"

And the makeup minimum

If you wear makeup, the minimum face is concealer where you need it, something cream on your cheeks or lips, and mascara. Five minutes, three products, done. We wrote that morning up in detail in the five-minute face.

Everything else (serums, essences, masks, the extra steps with lovely names) is optional extra, not homework. Add a step back only when you can say what problem it solves for you. "The video said so" is not a problem you have.

The verdict
Night: cleanse, moisturize, exfoliate sometimes. Morning: rinse, moisturize, SPF. Do it every day and skip the rest without guilt.

Keep fixing things
